Project for Hokitika’s new wastewater treatment plant kicks off

13 August 2021

A new subcommittee, formed with members of Council and local iwi representatives held their first meeting at the beginning of August to start work on a new wastewater treatment plant project for Hokitika.

The Hokitika Wastewater Treatment Plant Project Oversight Subcommittee will provide governance as the project progresses. The goal of the project is to develop a fit-for-purpose wastewater solution that is sensitive to cultural and environmental concerns and meets the needs of Westland District ratepayers.

In a first for the Council, the subcommittee is an equal partnership between Council and Mana Whenua, with two representatives from Ngāti Waewae and two representatives from Ngāti Maahaki. This partnership honours the Manatu Whakaaetanga Partnership agreement signed in 2020.
