Kea proof rubbish bins

If you are in Franz Josef you will see that the public rubbish bins there are a little bit different. Staff from Westland District Council and the bin manufacturer Tilley Group Ltd designed a ‘kea proof’ lid, which attaches to the standard receptacle base. The lid has a spring-loaded door and narrow aperture to prevent kea from accessing the bin.

Installing these bins helps the Department of Conservation’s efforts to keep kea safe and healthy.
