Introduction to Local Government: Elections

Local authority elections are held every three years in October. This year the election is on 12 October.

Voters in Westland receive voting papers to vote for the Mayor, and members of the Westland District Council, a Westland representative on the West Coast Regional Council (Westland Constituency), members of the West Coast Development Trust, and the West Coast District Health Board.

The address that you have provided for the parliamentary electoral roll is where you receive a voting pack and the local authority you can vote for, so make sure that your address is up-to-date. If you pay rates in the Westland District but do not live in Westland you are eligible to place a ratepayer’s vote. There are a number of ways to enrol to vote, check them out at elections.org

A full list of the key dates for the 2019 local authority elections and how to stand as a candidate can be found here.

Rental Home Insulation

By 1 July 2019 all private rental homes are required to comply with the insulation requirements in the Residential Tenancies (Smoke Alarms and Insulation) Regulations 2016.

Landlords must have insulation installed that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements. You can do this yourself or use a registered insulation installer.

For information and advice about checking your current insulation and the requirements, see this booklet.

Landlords who do not ensure that the insulation in their home complies with the requirements face fines of up to $4000 under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986.

March/April Notices

Drinking Water Plumbsolvency Notice

Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.

We recommend this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

If you have any concerns, please contact Martin Ross, Council’s Water Services Engineer 3waters@westlanddc.govt.nz or phone 0800 474 834.

Kurbside Recycling

Items that should go into your recycling:

  • Cardboard
  • Plastic containers and bottles (numbered 1,2,4 and 5)
  • Metal tins and cans
  • Paper

Glass is accepted for recycling at the Hokitika and Franz Josef Transfer Stations free of charge.

9/10 recycling bins in the District contain only accepted recyclable items.

Please do not put rubbish items, such as dirty nappies, and garden waste into your recycling bin.
